Squirrel, Stealing?

She sent a photo from the
Fenceline, captioned,
"Squirrel stealing almonds."
A leap to judgement.
I know this squirrel.
60 years ago my brother
Told me a story about
A squirrel named Benny.
I fell asleep, but ever after,
I called all squirrels that.
Benny's mother lives in our
Woody End and eats plums.
Benny needs protein.
Almonds are expensive in
Stores but free on our tree.
He has no money and
That's all right with me.

  1. Awww. I'm so glad it's all right with you that Benny helps himself to your bounty. And great Normaphoto! From sad experience I know it's hard to get those fellows to pose nicely.

    1. O Jenny, thanks for reading my poem. Benny doesn't eat all that much and he can't grow up right on just plums. He's welcome to the upper almonds.

  2. I like the sweet, endearing feel of this one. Another charm. Thanks, Geo.

    1. Kind Robyn, when I wrote this I remembered the main agricultural pursuit of Chico in 1970, when we spent a year there: Almonds! There used to be mountains of almonds across the creek from Laburnum Ave.

    2. We still have loads of almonds around here and the Chico Nut Factory (or something like that), but I don't know of Laburmum Ave.

      Keep a smile, Geo.

    3. As I recall, Chico Nut Co. was on Oleander, which ran between Laburnum (where I lived) and Esplanade. The company was called something else then but was renamed in my honor.

  3. Oh how utterly beautiful...how touching!
Really wish everyone felt the way you do...the world would be a much happier and more compassionate place.
Thank you so much for this, Geo...it truly warmed my heart! :))

    1. Thanks for your very encouraging comment, Ygraine. It's so easy to be kind to squirrels --one can build on that.

  4. Perhaps he was only borrowing the almonds. I'm sure he will return them when he is finished with them.

  6. You truly understand co-exist and God bless you for that.
My daughter thinks that it is neat that you have an almond tree.

    1. Most kind, Munir. And yes it is lovely to have an almond tree --not planted by me, but by birds or perhaps squirrels many years ago.
