Davy Crockett Coincidence

I had a racoon hat
That recovered and
Returned to the wild.
I was an unusual child,
Like other selves, left
Our narrow lanes and
Consorted with elves,
Fell out of our brains.
What, you too? Thought
So: let us, you and
I, together go --adventure
Awaits, of that I'm sure.

  1. The only wild animals we have around here are the occasional fox, or hedgehog or squirrel. Foxes are becoming more urban.

    God bless.

    1. Dear Victor, I have always wished to encounter hedgehogs but, given my location, never have. We do get the odd fox --sometimes they sound like they're chuckling. Squirrels, tree-frogs and coyotes are most numerous. The city is reaching toward this vineyard, so we hear lots of unmuffled cars at night instead of Nature's voices. Then again, maybe that's nature too.

    2. We're also lucky to have a good selection of birds visiting the garden. Plenty of pigeons too.

      God bless.

  2. Geo:

Your post was written on what was my father’s 97th birthday..... and your poem reminded me of him. When I was a youngster, he had a raccoon cap, and always liked raccoons.

It has been a long time since I thought of that raccoon cap. I was really missing my father, especially so on his birthday. I am really happy about this serendipity in terms of your poem for me.

    1. Dear Prof., I consider it an honor and privilege to have evoked a memory of one so dear. My own dad died in 1960, in November, yet still sometimes visits my dreams as an encouraging presence. In December I shall turn 71 --21 years older than he got to be. It may be something memory or the universe sends, but a father's influence never ends.

  3. That magical spirit and mind of yours seems even more brilliant, years/decades without your raccoon hat. Can't wait to go on more adventures with you.

You're truly a special, loving soul, Geo.
Much love and playfulness through the holidays and into 2021.

  4. I love your writing so much. I read that your raccoon hat 'recovered and returned to the wild' and immediately I had an image of a raccoon hat sneaking off into the woods. Perfect :)

    1. Thanks Michelle, glad you enjoyed the poem. I really did have such a cap in the 1950's --all us little kids were into Davy Crockett hats. I don't remember what became of it but made up that story which persists.

  5. This is so well written. I enjoy it.

Raccoons? "Good eatin'" I have been told from my rural past.

    1. Dear Susan, that is a prominent phrase from my own rural past. Seems like everything was "good eatin'". I remember scampering under picnic tables to avoid being devoured by larger relatives.
