Back In 2012

One night our brains slipped
Out, grew hair, got into the
Attic and started scratching.
An angry mob resulted on
The Rim of Hell. Well,
Avalanche was inevitable.
We slid scrabbling gravity
Into oil burning in oil.
Theology scalded off and
Past had access to our souls
That the future is denied.
It's a wonder no one died!

  1. Hah! It -is- a wonder no one died--or hardly anyone! The first six lines fit other American pseudo-apocalyptic future armageddons, like Y2K, Hale-Bopp, and the founding of all those American religions from the Mormons to the Seventh Day Adventists and Jehovah's Witnesses in the 19th century to Scientology, Urantia, I AM, and Dianetics in the 20th. Levity tends to be a cure for such false gravity, as this poem indicates!

  2. There's caution under the levity, Willie. JW's are among the few modern churches that passed thru their cultic phase without bloodshed. Mormon, Scientology and some other lodges that got out of hand could have learned much by their example --as some others indeed did learn. Idea is, macro-objectification of human anxieties should be approached with some care or people get hurt.
